Supported Independent Living Program Focus: Support services for older youth living independently or semi-independently Details: Family Support Counsellor provides support services Target Population: Older youths Intake: Referral by MCFD Time Duration: Six months to two years depending on age and needs Staffing: Family Support Counsellors and/or Youth Care Worker The Supported Independent Living Program provides support services to youth living independently or semi-independently through a Family Support Counsellor. In semi-independent living situations, the youth live “as if” independent in suites provided by the agency, often attached to another program. In independent living situations, the youth live independently with financial support through MCFD (Youth Agreements) but receive ‘non-residential’ services or support through a Connexus Family Support Counsellor. The Family Support Counsellor may monitor or control the monies allocated to the youth’s care in order to teach budgeting, banking, payment of bills, and healthy food shopping, as well as assist the youth in other life skill areas such as day programs, employment search, self-care, and recreation. The client is typically a youth who has been “in care” and
who does not have an effective, natural family support connection. The
program is well suited to youth that have “graduated” from
group home, residential or foster placements, but who require additional
support to be successful in semi-independent or independent living situations.
Individual service plans allow for various levels of support consistent
with the youth’s needs. |
